Township Day is celebrated on November 27th, commemorating San Pedro’s transformation from a small village to an official town! While there’s a long history of inhabitants in San Pedro and Ambergris Caye, San Pedro was only declared a town on by the government of Belize in 1984.
That means that this year, San Pedro turns 34 years old! So what was San Pedro before it was a vibrant town?
If our fresh seafood and boats didn’t give it away, San Pedro’s roots are in fishing! Lobster, snapper, mullet and bonefish were the main industry. You can even see some of the old net fish traps on the back side of the island to this day!
We hope you’ll join us on November 27th in celebrating our beloved San Pedro. Like any Belizean celebration, you can expect food, music, a parade and more!
