Summer is still in full swing, but it’s already getting to that time where planning for the fall needs to kick in. There are so many local and nearby sites that you can see year round, but with an area that has such a rich cultural heritage, there are also once-a-year festivities that one can use to help plan a visit to the Ambergris Caye area.

September:

Numerous cultural, religious, and sporting activities are held a couple of weeks before St. George’s Caye Day (September 10th). Flag-raising ceremonies, parades, street jump-ups, music, dance, and foods can all be had and enjoyed. Crowning of Miss San Pedro.

Sept. 10 – St. George’s Caye Day celebrates and commemorates a battle in 1798 when the Spanish were defeated by slaves, and British soldiers. Around the country similar official ceremonies and parades take place.

Sept. 21 – Independence Day.

October:

Oct. 12 – Pan American Day: Orange Walk and Corozal . Fiestas and beauty contest to celebrate Mestizo culture. There are horse and cycle races. Tourism Week: Activities include silent and Dutch auction, grand vacation raffle drawing and fair.

November:

Nov. 19 – Garifuna Settlement Day Festival; mainly in the southern most areas of the country to mark the first arrival of the Garifuna in 1832 in Dangriga.
